Gov. Rick Perry took the pulpit on Sunday to honor the 10th anniversary of Frisco’s Elevate Life Church, chastise Washington bureaucracy and strengthen his ongoing campaign for re-election.

A church member who used to work on the Perry campaign invited him to speak at the service. Read DMN colleague Diane Rado’s account of Perry’s visit here.

The evangelical megachurch had a few announcements of its own. Formerly Celebration Covenant Church, Elevate Life Church could establish a charter school for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, church officials said on Sunday. A nonprofit has expressed interest in creating “Leadership Prep School” on church grounds. The school would open in 2011.

Charter schools are not bound by the rules of traditional public schools and can experiment more with school hours and teaching practices.
